Fire Safety - An important message from Cambridgeshire Constabulary

Dear Parent/Carer

Fire investigation concludes and most probable cause identified

03/07/2023

The investigation into the cause of Friday’s fatal flat fire in Kings Hedges, Cambridge, has now concluded. It is believed that the fire started accidentally and the most probable cause was an e-bike.

Area Commander Stuart Smith, from Cambridgeshire fire and Rescue Service, said: "Fire service and specialist fire investigators, together with police forensic teams and a fire dog, have spent the weekend carrying out a thorough investigation of the maisonette. A fire investigation looks for the most probable cause and in this case, we believe that to be an electric bike that was charging.

"We know e-bikes and e-scooters are popular modes of personal transport at the moment and we are urging anyone with one to be aware of the potential risks and follow simple precautions to reduce the likelihood of the batteries overheating.

"We also know that regardless of the cause, devastating incidents like this make people think about fire safety in general at home and as well as having lots of information on our website, our fire safety team will be in the Sackville Close area over the next few days to share advice and offer reassurance."

E-bike and e-scooter safety advice:

  • Avoid charging the battery overnight
  • Do not leave charging for any longer than it needs to fully charge
  • Plug the cable into a main socket rather than an extension lead
  • Do not cover the battery with anything while charging
  • Make sure you use the battery recommended by the manufacturer
  • Always use the manufacturer approved charger for the product, and if you spot any signs of wear and tear or damage buy an official replacement charger for your product from a reputable seller
  • Ensure you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home and in the room where you charge the bike/scooter.

General fire safety advice:

  • Close internal doors at night - have this as part of your bedtime routine
  • Keep stairs clear and keys to external door and windows in places that are easy to access if you need to escape in an emergency
  • Ensure everyone in your house knows what to do if a fire breaks out and practice this
  • Ensure smoking materials are fully out and don’t smoke when tired
  • Ensure open fires are properly out before you go to bed.

Stuart concluded: "In the aftermath of Friday’s tragedy, I’d urge everyone to check their home for potential fire risks. There is an online tool on our website that can be used to highlight areas to think about. It isn’t just e-bikes and e-scooters, we have so many electrical gadgets these days that all require charging, people just need to be aware of the risks and put steps in place to ensure they are being charged safety. You can also complete the online tool for older or other vulnerable family members too who may not live with you and may have other habits or risk factors that make them vulnerable such as they smoke or have limited mobility which may prevent them from being able to escape if a fire took hold. In these cases, our specialist fire prevention officers will visit in person and carry out an assessment.”

Greater Cambridge Partnership

Engagement opens on Fulbourn Greenway Phase 1: Eastern Section

We are inviting the public to share their views on proposals for the Fulbourn Greenway Phase 1: Eastern Section.

Phase one would run between Fulbourn Village and the Yarrow Road.

We are inviting feedback on this phase of the greenway first. This is so we could deliver the proposed safety improvements sooner. We are working with Network Rail on phase two of the scheme and plan to present designs later in the year.

The Fulbourn Greenway is part of the 150-kilometre Greenway network. It aims to play its part in providing more sustainable alternatives to the car. In turn, helping to ease pressure on our streets as Cambridge continues to grow.

This public engagement follows a consultation with residents in 2018 about the plans.

The engagement is now open and will close to responses at midday on Friday 21 July.

Find out more online and take part in the survey

Register for our online event on 4 July

Attend our drop-in event at the Fulbourn Centre on 13 July

For more information visit: www.greatercambridge.org.uk/fulbourn-greenway

The 12 Greater Cambridge Greenways developed through discussions with stakeholders before formal consultations in 2018.

Following a pause during the pandemic, we kicked-off a rolling programme of engagement on the routes in summer 2022.

Fulbourn Cricket Club is running several courses this term for children.  We have something for all age groups!  Once again, we will be running our All Stars (5-8 yo, recommended for Y1-3) and Dynamos (8-11 yo, recommended for Y4-6) on Thursday evenings from 11th May, these give a great intro to the sport using a soft ball.   Sign-up is via the ECB website at https://www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars

All Stars Cricket

All Stars Cricket is a brand-new initiative from the England and Wales Cricket Board aimed at providing children aged five to eight with a great first experience in cricket.

www.ecb.co.uk

This year we are also running an under-12s squad for children who wish to progress to hard-ball cricket.  This is primarily aimed at Y6/Y7 children but fine for Y5 children with good confidence or some previous cricket experience. Children can do this AND Dynamos! We will be running training sessions on Sunday afternoons - beginning imminently - and have league matches against local villages throughout the term from 12th May.  This squad is entirely managed by the club, and we need to register players so if your child is interested, please contact Claire at clairenichollsdrc@outlook.com and she will send an information pack via email with everything you need to know.  There will be a small subscription which will cover match fees and if you sign up soon (before we place the order) your child will also get a free playing top as well!

All squads are for girls and boys.

Girls Football at Bottisham Football Club

We currently have four Girls teams and are passionate about expanding on this. We have space in all of our current teams for more players and are particularly looking for girls in Years 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. However, we welcome enquiries from all age groups. We have recently worked hard to win a large grant for Girls football at our club. This will not only secure the future of Girls football with us but will provide the girls with extra opportunities and better facilities/equipment. Following the huge success of our National Women's team, the Lionesses this summer we would like to ensure that all girls have the opportunity to play and enjoy football. Our teams are all friendly and welcoming. Most of our girls train on the 3G at Bottisham Village College, on Thursday evenings (U10s train Tuesdays) and have matches on Saturday mornings. For any further information please do not hesitate to contact via our club website (www.bottishamfc.co.uk), social media or contact our Head of Girls Football, Bryan Brasnett direct Brasnettbryan@gmail.com
